Reviewing Or Switching Your Medicare Plan In Wichita

Wanting to switch plans and being allowed to switch plans are two different things. Here is when Medicare lets you move, and how to tell whether you should.

Medicare information last reviewed: October 2026. 2026 Part B premium: $202.90 per month.

This page is for people who already have Medicare and wonder whether the plan they picked still fits. Carriers rewrite their plans every year, so a plan that suited you last January can drift away from your doctors and prescriptions without you doing a thing. A yearly look catches that. Asking us for Wichita Medicare guidance costs nothing, since the carrier pays the agent rather than you.

When You Can Switch

Changes happen inside set windows. Four of them cover almost every switch a Wichita retiree makes, and the full list lives on the Medicare enrollment help page.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Runs each year from October 15 through December 7 and is open to everyone on Medicare. You can join, leave or trade Medicare Advantage plans and Part D drug plans. Whatever you choose begins January 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (MA OEP)
Only for people already in an Advantage plan, from January 1 through March 31. One switch is allowed: to a different Advantage plan, or back to Original Medicare with a drug plan added.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Some life events open a window outside the calendar: moving out of a plan's area, losing other coverage, or a plan pulling out of the Wichita market. Each event carries its own clock.
Medigap and guaranteed issue
You get one six-month Medicare Supplement window, and it starts once you are both 65 and on Part B. After it closes, only certain events bring back a guaranteed issue right.

The autumn window has its own walk-through: Annual Enrollment for Wichita and the surrounding towns.

Signs You Should Review Your Current Plan

Any year is a fine year to look. These events make it worth doing now.

  • Your doctor started, stopped or changed a prescription.
  • You moved to a different pharmacy, or your old one shut its doors.
  • A new specialist joined your care, or a longtime doctor retired.
  • The renewal letter shows a premium jump you did not expect.
  • One of your drugs changed tier or left the formulary.
  • You moved house, or plan to.
  • A new diagnosis or an upcoming surgery changed what you need.
  • A doctor or hospital you rely on left the plan's network.

The Annual Notice Of Change (ANOC)

Advantage and Part D plans must send members an ANOC by September 30. Skip the glossy brochures in the same stack and read this one. It spells out, for next year:

  • The new monthly premium.
  • New deductibles and copays.
  • Doctors and hospitals added to the network or dropped from it.
  • Drugs added, removed or moved to a different tier.
  • Extra benefits that grew, shrank or went away.

Grab a highlighter and mark only what touches your own doctors and drugs. Everything else is noise.

What To Compare When Switching

Four checks. Run them in this order.

Your doctors and hospitals
Search each one by name in the new plan's directory, then call the office to confirm. If you use Wesley Medical Center or one of the Ascension Via Christi campuses, look up that exact location rather than the system name.
Every prescription
Enter each drug into the new plan's formulary. Write down its tier and whether it needs prior authorization or step therapy.
The full year's cost
Add the premium, the deductible and the copays you would pay in an ordinary year. A low premium can hide a high year.
The extras you would use
Dental, vision and fitness perks look good on paper. Count only the ones you would actually claim.

Have your notice handy and a licensed agent will run all four checks with you over the phone.

The Switch Process

  1. Confirm which window you are in, then compare plans inside it.
  2. Enroll in the new plan. Medicare ends the old one for you when the new one starts, so you do not cancel anything.
  3. Hold on to the confirmation letter and both member cards until the new plan is working.
  4. Use the new card at your first visit and first pharmacy fill, and call the plan right away if anything bounces.

Medigap Switching Notes

A Supplement runs on its own rules. You buy it from a carrier, and once your first window has passed the carrier can ask health questions before it says yes.

  • Kansas does not have a birthday rule, so no annual free switch window comes around.
  • Health questions do not mean a no. Many people in stable health pass them.
  • Each carrier weighs health history its own way, so screening ahead of an application can avoid a decline on your record.
  • Keep the current policy in force until the new one is approved in writing.

The plan letters and how they compare are on the Medigap plans page.

Our Annual Review Process

The yearly review asks four questions, each one as a before-and-after. Which doctors are new and which are gone? What changed on your drug list? What does the renewal say next year costs? Did anything change at home, a move or more travel?

Plenty of reviews end with "keep what you have", and that is a good result. We are a licensed Kansas agency that compares plans from the carriers we are appointed with, by phone or video, all year. Not sure which kind of plan you hold today? Start with the Medicare plans overview.

Rather have a licensed agent ring you? Ask for a callback and we return it the same or next business day.

Questions about changing a Medicare plan

When am I allowed to change my Medicare plan?

In the autumn Annual Enrollment Period, in the January to March window if you hold an Advantage plan, or during a Special Enrollment Period that a life event has opened for you.

Does a plan switch put my Medicare at risk?

Your Part A and Part B stay put. A switch changes which company pays the claims and on what terms, not whether you are on Medicare.

Can I leave Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare?

Yes, in the autumn window or the January to March one. Plan the Supplement side first, since leaving Advantage does not by itself give you guaranteed issue rights for a Medigap policy.

Does it cost anything to change plans?

No fee applies to a change made inside a window you qualify for. The old plan ends on the day the new one begins.

In Kansas, can I change Supplement plans with no health questions?

Mostly no. Kansas has no yearly birthday window, so outside your first six months on Part B or a guaranteed issue situation, the new carrier may review your health before it accepts you.

Time for your annual review?

Have your ANOC in hand and we go through it line by line. No cost.
